Why Side Quests Matter in Gothic Remake

Side quests in Gothic Remake are more than filler—they unlock exclusive gear, teach combat mechanics, and open shortcuts that make the main quest far easier. Many of the best weapons, armor sets, and recipes are gated behind optional tasks. This guide lists the most rewarding side quests, their exact locations, and what you’ll get for completing them. We’ve also highlighted hidden quests that the game never marks on your map.

If you’re just starting, check our [Beginner Guide](/guides/beginner-guide) for tips on early survival. For combat tips that will help you handle tougher side quest enemies, see [Combat Strategies](/guides/combat-strategies).

The Most Rewarding Side Quests

1. The Old Camp’s Arena Champion

**Location:** Old Camp – The Arena (speak to Scatty near the arena gate).

**Quest overview:** Scatty challenges you to defeat a series of opponents in the arena. Each victory pays ore and improves your reputation with the Old Camp. After beating all three fighters, you face the reigning champion, Kirgo. Win and you’ll earn the right to challenge the highest tier for a legendary reward.

**Steps:** 1. Talk to Scatty during daylight hours. 2. Bet all your ore (you can wager up to 500, but the fights are winnable with basic melee skills). 3. Defeat Bloodwyn, then Fletcher, then Kirgo. 4. Accept the final challenge—a fight against the Old Camp’s gate guard, Thorus.

**Rewards:**

  • 1,000 ore (plus doubled if you bet max).
  • Champion’s Amulet (+15 strength, +10 one-handed weapon skill).
  • Access to the “Champion” dialogue option that unlocks a shortcut in the main quest later.

**Hidden gem:** After becoming champion, return to the arena at night. A guard will whisper about a secret fight against a Shadowbeast. If you win, you get the **Shadowbeast Horn**, a crafting component for the [Legendary Horned Helmet](/guides/legendary-equipment).

2. The Alchemist’s Lost Formula

**Location:** New Camp – Alchemist’s Hut (northwest of the rice fields, speak to Ignaz).

**Quest overview:** Ignaz wants you to collect three rare ingredients scattered across the colony: a Swampweed from the Swamp Camp, a Minecrawler Mandible from the Old Mine, and a Fire Nettle from the northern forest. In exchange, he teaches you one permanent stat-boosting potion recipe.

**Steps:** 1. Travel to the Swamp Camp and barter with the weed dealer (or steal a Swampweed from the nearby field). 2. Enter the Old Mine and kill Minecrawlers until one drops a Mandible (10% drop chance; use ranged attacks to avoid poison). 3. Head to the northern forest near the abandoned tower. A Fire Nettle grows behind the tower—watch out for wolves. 4. Return to Ignaz and choose between the Elixir of Strength (+5 permanent strength) or the Elixir of Dexterity (+5 permanent dexterity).

**Rewards:**

  • Recipe for your chosen elixir.
  • 300 ore.
  • Ignaz becomes a trainer for Alchemy up to level 2.

**Hidden gem:** If you bring Ignaz a Taste of Innos (found on the corpse near the Stonehenge), he will offer a second recipe for free: Potion of the Weaver, which grants permanent night vision and +10 mana.

3. The Water Mages’ Request

**Location:** New Camp – Water Mage Monastery (enter via the rice fields, talk to Saturas).

**Quest overview:** The Water Mages need you to retrieve five ancient stone tablets from various ruins around the colony. Each tablet is guarded by undead or traps. Complete the set and Saturas will reward you with the powerful Water Robe and teach you a potent spell.

**Steps:** 1. Accept from Saturas inside the monastery (requires New Camp membership or high reputation). 2. Find tablets in: the Sunken Temple (Old Camp mine area), the Crypt near the Stonehenge, the Abandoned Castle (far west), the Orc Cemetery (north), and one in a chest inside the Swamp Camp’s temple. 3. Use a torch or light spell—many ruins are pitch black. The undead are weak to fire. 4. Return all tablets to Saturas.

**Rewards:**

  • Water Robe (armor 50, +20 mana, +10 fire resistance).
  • Learn the Ice Block spell (freezes enemies for 5 seconds).
  • 500 experience points.

**Hidden gem:** While in the Sunken Temple, look for a wall carving with a riddle. Solve it (push the stone blocks in the order: left, right, left, middle) to reveal a hidden chamber containing the **Staff of the Depths**—a two-handed weapon with +40 magic power and a lightning bolt effect on hit. Perfect for mage builds; see [Best Builds](/guides/best-builds) for how to use it.

4. The Ore Baron’s Betrayal

**Location:** Old Camp – The Castle (speak to Bartholo in the inner courtyard).

**Quest overview:** Bartholo suspects that Gomez, the Ore Baron, is planning to betray the King. He asks you to spy on Gomez’s private meetings and uncover the conspiracy. This quest chain has far-reaching consequences and can lock you out of the Old Camp permanently if you side with the rebels.

**Steps:** 1. Sneak into the castle at night via the servant’s entrance (key from the kitchen boy). 2. Eavesdrop on Gomez’s meeting in his chambers (be invisible or hide behind the tapestry). 3. Report back to Bartholo. 4. He asks you to steal the **Royal Seal** from Gomez’s chest. Break in again, pick the difficult lock (lockpicking 2 required, or use a Master Key from a chest in the library). 5. Bring the seal to Bartholo.

**Rewards:**

  • Gomez’s Ring (+20 max health, +10 armor).
  • Access to the Rebel Hideout (New Camp faction).
  • 800 ore and Bartholo’s personal stash (contains a Heavy Crossbow).

**Hidden gem:** If you instead deliver the seal to Gomez (telling on Bartholo), you earn 1,500 ore and the Old Camp title “Loyalist,” which unlocks the exclusive **Ore Battle Armor** from the blacksmith. Choose carefully—you can only do one path.

5. The New Camp’s Supply Run

**Location:** New Camp – Main Hall (speak to Lares).

**Quest overview:** Lares needs supplies for the camp’s expansion: 10 iron ore, 5 bundles of wood, and a rare Golem Heart. Ore and wood are easy to gather; the Golem Heart drops only from the Stone Golem in the foggy canyon northwest of the New Camp.

**Steps:** 1. Mine iron ore from any vein (Old Camp quarry is easiest). 2. Chop wood in the forest—you need a woodcutter’s axe (buy or loot one). 3. To get the Golem Heart, head to the Canyon of Mists. The Stone Golem there is level 20 and immune to normal weapons. Use magic or blunt weapons (hammers). A good tip: kite it to the canyon edge and use the environment to deal damage (falling rocks). 4. Deliver all items to Lares.

**Rewards:**

  • 400 ore.
  • New Camp Armor (45 armor, +10 against projectiles).
  • A permanent +5% trading discount at all New Camp merchants.

**Hidden gem:** The Stone Golem also guards a chest with a **Ring of Mist** (wear to avoid detection while sneaking). This ring makes pickpocketing and stealth sequences trivial. It’s behind a breakable wall near the golem’s spawn.

6. The Swamp Camp’s Sacred Fires

**Location:** Swamp Camp – Temple of the Sleeper (speak to Corristo).

**Quest overview:** The Swamp Camp believes the Sleeper demands five sacred fires be lit across the swamp. Each fire is at a different shrine, but they have been corrupted by swamp monsters. You must clear each shrine and relight the braziers.

**Steps:** 1. Ask Corristo for the locations; they are marked on your map. 2. Go to each shrine: the Sunken Village, the Spider Cave, the Overgrown Altar, the Twin Pillars, and the Swamp Dragon’s Nest. 3. Each shrine has a mini-boss (spiders, swamp golems, or a young dragon). Use fire arrows—swamp creatures are weak to fire. 4. Light the brazier with a torch or fire spell. 5. Return to Corristo.

**Rewards:**

  • Swamp Robe (armor 30, +30 mana, +20 poison resistance).
  • Learn the Swarm spell (summons insects to distract enemies).
  • 600 ore and access to the Swamp Camp’s secret library (contains several rare spell scrolls).

**Hidden gem:** At the Twin Pillars shrine, if you look under the left pillar, you’ll find a skeletal hand holding the **Ring of the Sleeper** (chance on hit to put enemies to sleep). This ring turns tough boss fights into cakewalks.

7. The Blacksmith’s Masterpiece

**Location:** Old Camp – Blacksmith’s Forge (speak to Huno).

**Quest overview:** Huno wants to forge a legendary blade—the **Ore Dragon Slayer**—but he needs you to gather the materials: 20 raw steel, 10 magic ore, and a Dragon’s Heart. The Dragon’s Heart drops from the Great Fire Dragon in the northern mountains.

**Steps:** 1. Collect raw steel from any smithy (buy or melt down weapons). 2. Mine magic ore in the Abandoned Mine; bring a pickaxe and be ready for fire elementals. 3. To get the Dragon’s Heart, you must kill the Great Fire Dragon. It’s a level 30 boss with high health and devastating fire breath. Wear fire-resistant gear (like the Water Robe or plenty of fire protection potions). A good tactic: use the Ice Block spell to freeze it momentarily and attack from behind. 4. Return the items to Huno and wait 3 in-game days.

**Rewards:**

  • Ore Dragon Slayer (one-handed sword, damage 120, +20 strength, +50 fire damage, bonus damage against dragons).
  • 500 ore.
  • Huno becomes a master trainer for smithing (level 3).

**Hidden gem:** While in the Abandoned Mine, find the secret alcove behind the lava fall. Inside is the **Fireproof Shield**, which grants 50% fire damage reduction. Pair it with the Dragon Slayer for an unmatched anti-dragon setup.

8. The Missing Hunters (Hidden Quest)

**Location:** This quest has no marker. In the forest east of the Old Camp, near the ruined watchtower, you’ll find a dying hunter named Fisk.

**Quest overview:** Fisk gasps that his hunting party was ambushed by a pack of Wargs and begs you to find his friends. You must track them down using clues in the forest.

**Steps:** 1. Talk to Fisk (he dies after giving the quest). 2. Follow the blood trail north. At the fork in the path, go left toward the cave. 3. Inside the Warg Cave, you’ll find three dead hunters. Search their bodies for a journal. 4. The journal mentions a hidden stash in the “hollow tree near the stream.” 5. Head to the stream west of the cave; the hollow tree is glowing. Open it to find the hunters’ loot.

**Rewards:**

  • Hunter’s Bow (ranged weapon, damage 80, +15 dexterity).
  • 200 arrows.
  • 500 ore.
  • 300 experience.

**Hidden gem:** The Warg Alpha in the cave drops the **Alpha Fang**, which can be crafted into a +10 dexterity necklace at any workbench (see our [Crafting Guide](/guides/crafting-guide)).

9. The Runaway Apprentice (Hidden Quest)

**Location:** New Camp – Rice Fields; overhear two farmers talking about an apprentice who fled.

**Quest overview:** A junior alchemist named Tandor has gone rogue and set up a lab in the swamp, experimenting with dangerous poisons. You can decide to help him or turn him in.

**Steps:** 1. Find Tandor’s lab in the swamp south of the New Camp, guarded by swamp golems. 2. Talk to Tandor. He asks you to bring him 5 swamp gas sacs (looted from the golems). 3. If you help him, he rewards you; if you report him to the Water Mages, you get a different reward.

**Rewards if helping:**

  • 3 vials of deadly poison (can be applied to weapons for +50 poison damage over 10 seconds).
  • Recipe for Poison Bomb.

**Rewards if turning in:**

  • 400 ore from the Water Mages.
  • Water Mage reputation boost.
  • Access to buy Water Mage robes early.

**Hidden gem:** In Tandor’s lab, there’s a locked chest (lockpicking 3) containing the **Manual of Dark Alchemy**, which teaches the skill to brew potions without a lab bench anywhere. Extremely useful for survival builds.

How to Find Hidden Side Quests

Gothic Remake hides many side quests behind exploration and NPC schedules. Here are tips:

  • Sleep in different camps. Some quests appear only when you rest in a specific bed.
  • Read every book and note; they often hint at unmarked quests.
  • Talk to NPCs after completing main story chapters—dialogue changes.
  • Visit areas at different times of day. The Warg quest only appears at night, for example.
  • Invest in the “Perception” skill to see hidden objects and triggers.
  • Keep a spare save before pivotal decisions; many quests have exclusive rewards.
